Spirit in Sanctuary
SPIRIT'S STORY
Spirit was adopted into the Sanctuary in 2018 thanks to the keen eye of 5-year-old volunteer Izzie. Spirit had been rounded up and removed from public lands and stood in a holding facility, awaiting his fate. At first, Izzie wanted to adopt all the mustangs in the facility (so did we), but eventually settled on this eye-catching, dapple gray with blue eyes. After Izzie watched him for awhile as he stood at the back of the holding corral, she named him Spirit.
When Spirit was set free on Sanctuary land, he shot off the trailer bucking and running, seeming to revel in his restored freedom. He embodies mustang speed and agility. Today, Spirit keeps a distance from humans, but will approach just enough to get a good look when his curiosity overtakes him. Then he’s off, raising his tail high as he gallops away.
When new mustangs are brought to the Sanctuary, Spirit is the first to greet them. He sniffs them over, trotting back and forth, as if assuring them that they are now free and safe. Spirit is the flashy protector of the band. He especially watches over young Ionadh, a colt born at the Sanctuary in the summer of 2024. Spirit shows the depth of the bonds among mustangs living together and roaming free.
You can help Spirit . . . by choosing him.
*Luminaria is Spanish for a special light or lantern which guides by illuminating the way. Be a light for forever freedom for a mustang of Sky Mountain Wild Horse Sanctuary ~ where mustangs belong only to the sky, the mountains, the wild, and each other. Thank you for being a Luminaria for mustangs.
