Luna in Sanctuary

LUNA'S STORY

At Sky Mountain Wild Horse Sanctuary, we take horses as they are. Luna, a 2-year-old, heavily pregnant mare at adoption, was part of the original band of Sky mustangs. She was the most frightened, for reasons unknown. Luna reacted to humans by running at them in a blind panic. It was a sad and dangerous sight; a charging mustang galloping straight at you. Even when humans weren’t present, Luna was nervous and on guard, living her life in a seemingly constant state of fear.

Three weeks after being adopted, Luna gave birth to Starlight. It took months of living free and never being threatened by humans for Luna’s fear to begin to dissipate.

If you meet Luna today, you would never know she used to be an unpredictable, charging mustang. She glistens with muscle and maybe a few extra pounds, roaming calmly on the far side of the band. She shows no sign of high alert or panic. She’s still Luna, always keeping her distance from humans, watching warily, acting as she is… like a mustang free in sanctuary.

You can help Luna . . . by choosing her.

*Luminaria is Spanish for a special light or lantern which guides by illuminating the way. Be a light for forever freedom for a mustang of Sky Mountain Wild Horse Sanctuary ~ where mustangs belong only to the sky, the mountains, the wild, and each other. Thank you for being a Luminaria for mustangs.
