Kirei in Sanctuary
KIREI'S STORY
Kirei is the Japanese word for beautiful, a perfect name for a dark bay mare who was removed from public lands in 2022. This feisty 20-year-old mustang had lived her entire life roaming the range before she was rounded up and placed in a holding corral. She spent several months there, confined with no space to run free. Potential adopters passed her by, in part because of her age and because she was a true mustang, wild and untouched. Sky Mountain Wild staff chose to adopt Kirei and Astro, another elder mustang, to give them their best lives for however many years they had left.
Kirei is the epitome of wild. For decades she roamed where she wanted, at the pace she wanted. She was always on the lookout for predators, including humans, knowing that they were animals to avoid. At the Sanctuary, this mustang’s wild nature remains. She is an “in-flight” horse, always on the move, always looking out for humans.
When visitors catch a glimpse of her, they are in awe. Kirei lets herself be seen just for a moment, then disappears behind cover. We are grateful that this mare can now remain wild. Together with you, we give her the gift of sanctuary. In return, Kirei gives us a glimpse of what it feels like to be wild and free.
You can help Kirei . . . by choosing her.
*Luminaria is Spanish for a special light or lantern which guides by illuminating the way. Be a light for forever freedom for a mustang of Sky Mountain Wild Horse Sanctuary ~ where mustangs belong only to the sky, the mountains, the wild, and each other. Thank you for being a Luminaria for mustangs.
