Be a Light - or Luminaria* - for Joey

Joey at adoption

Joey (& Ionadh) in Sanctuary

JOEY'S STORY

In the fall of 2023, a young mare now known as Joey was rounded up from overgrazed land along with two other mustangs, Milagro and Lightning. This band of three was frightened and starving. Sky Mountain Wild adopted them and transported them to the Sanctuary’s special care corral for daily care and veterinary visits to help them recover. After months of care, Joey was set free out on the Sanctuary with Milagro and Lightning. She stayed close to them and her new band mates, always in flight and ready to run from any possible threat.

Sky Mountain Wild Horse Sanctuary is a non-breeding sanctuary so that we may adopt more vulnerable mustangs at risk for abuse, loss of freedom, and slaughter. We are also prepared for wild horses arriving at the Sanctuary already pregnant. By spring of 2024, Joey’s huge belly gave away that she was expecting. On a beautiful early summer day, she appeared with her new foal by her side.

Today, Joey is losing some of her fear of humans. She shows a desire to be in the presence of visitors, seeking out humans on her own terms. She and her foal, Ionadh, will roam free together throughout their lives in the miracle of sanctuary.

You can help Joey . . . by choosing her.

*Luminaria is Spanish for a special light or lantern which guides by illuminating the way. Be a light for forever freedom for a mustang of Sky Mountain Wild Horse Sanctuary ~ where mustangs belong only to the sky, the mountains, the wild, and each other. Thank you for being a Luminaria for mustangs.
